Comment-to-DM - Instagram Glossary

Comment-to-DM is an automation that watches a post for a keyword in the comments and sends the commenter a direct message in response. It is the standard compliant mechanism for converting public engagement into a private conversation at scale.

It works because it inverts the usual friction. Instead of asking people to click a link, leave the app and fill in a form, you ask them to type one word where they already are. Conversion from 'comment LINK' to a delivered DM routinely runs several times higher than the equivalent link-in-bio journey.

Two things make the difference between an automation that converts and one that annoys. The keyword should be a word the person would plausibly type, not a code. And the message that arrives should deliver the promised thing immediately rather than asking a qualifying question first - the qualifying question belongs in the second message, after you have kept your side of the deal.
