Opt-in - Instagram Glossary

An opt-in is a person's explicit agreement to receive messages from you. On Instagram, commenting a keyword or sending a DM constitutes consent for that conversation. It does not constitute consent for email marketing, which requires a separate and explicit agreement.

The distinction gets businesses in trouble constantly. Someone commenting 'GUIDE' has agreed to receive the guide in a DM. They have not agreed to be added to a newsletter, and moving them there without asking is a breach of GDPR-style consent rules regardless of what the platform permits.

The clean pattern is to make the second ask explicitly. Deliver the thing they asked for, then ask whether they want the follow-up. Consent given in response to a clear question is defensible; consent inferred from an unrelated action is not.
