Vanity metric - Instagram Glossary

A vanity metric is a number that rises reliably, feels like progress, and does not predict revenue. Follower count is the canonical Instagram example: it correlates with effort, correlates weakly with income, and is the number most businesses optimise anyway.

The test for whether a metric is vanity is whether it changes a decision. If followers went up 20% this month and nothing about your plan would change either way, you are tracking it for reassurance rather than information.

The metrics that pass the test on Instagram are usually further down the chain: saves, DM conversations started, emails captured, and profile visits from non-followers. They move slower and feel worse, which is precisely why they get ignored in favour of the number on the profile.
