Community Guidelines - Instagram Glossary

Instagram's Community Guidelines define what content is permitted, and the separate Recommendations Guidelines define what content is eligible to be shown to non-followers. Content can comply with the first while being disqualified by the second, which is a distinction most reach complaints miss.

The Recommendations Guidelines are the ones that quietly cost reach. Content that is legal and permitted but flagged as low quality, clickbait, engagement bait or recycled from another platform can be kept on your profile while being excluded from Explore and reels recommendations.

Visible watermarks from other platforms are the most common self-inflicted case. Reposting content with a TikTok watermark is explicitly named as non-recommendable, which means it reaches your followers and effectively nobody else.
