Instagram Graph API - Instagram Glossary

The Instagram Graph API is Meta's official interface for professional accounts, allowing approved apps to publish posts, read insights, and send and receive direct messages. It is the only sanctioned way for a third-party tool to act on an Instagram account.

Everything a compliant tool can and cannot do is defined here. Scheduling works because the API has a publishing endpoint. Auto-DM-on-follow does not exist because the API has no follow webhook. When a tool claims a capability the API does not expose, it is either using an unofficial route or describing something else.

Access is gated by app review, and permissions are granted narrowly. A tool that requests broad permissions it does not need, or that asks for your Instagram password rather than sending you through Meta's own login, is not operating on the Graph API at all - and the account risk is yours, not theirs.
