Impressions - Instagram Glossary

Impressions count the total number of times a post was displayed, including repeat views by the same person. Impressions are always equal to or higher than reach. A high impressions-to-reach ratio means people came back to a post more than once.

Impressions are frequently quoted in media kits because they are the bigger number, which is exactly why an experienced brand buyer asks for reach instead. If someone reports engagement rate calculated on impressions, the rate is understated and the audience is overstated at the same time.

Where impressions genuinely tell you something is the ratio to reach. A carousel or a dense infographic that people return to will show an impressions-to-reach ratio well above 1.2. A reel people watch once and scroll past sits near 1.0. That gap is a signal about content depth, not distribution.
