Shares - Instagram Glossary

A share is a viewer sending a post to someone else, usually via DM or to their story. Shares are the strongest positive signal available to Instagram's ranking systems, because sharing costs social capital in a way that liking does not.

Sends to DMs specifically are what drive the outsized reach on posts that break out. The mechanic is straightforward: a share puts your content in a private conversation, which is a higher-trust context than any feed placement, and the recipient's engagement then feeds back into the post's own signal.

Content gets shared when it does something for the sharer - makes a point they wanted to make, is funny enough to be social currency, or is directly useful to a specific person they know. 'Tag someone who needs this' works because it names that mechanic out loud, which is also why it stops working when overused.
