Carousel - Instagram Glossary

A carousel is a single Instagram post containing up to twenty images or videos that a viewer swipes through. Carousels earn more time-on-post than single images and get a second chance at distribution, because Instagram may re-show slide two to someone who did not engage the first time.

Carousels are the highest-save format on the platform, and saves are weighted heavily in distribution. That makes them structurally suited to anything with steps, comparisons, or a list - the reader has a reason to return, and a reason to keep it.

The mechanics that matter: slide one has to earn the swipe, so it carries the same burden a reel's first second does. The last slide should ask for the save or the comment explicitly, because that is the moment the reader has decided the thing was useful. Uniform design across slides matters less than a clear reason to continue.
